Who We Are

Like many volunteer organizations, our Institute for CyberVolunteering is a tiny non-profit run entirely with volunteer help. We began operations in October, 2002.  We make up for our newness and small size by our enthusiasm for CyberVolunteering which, we believe, has the potential to expand the universe of volunteers and of rewarding opportunities for volunteering.

We are working to expand the universe of CyberVolunteering by encouraging social service and other organizations to think beyond the traditional face-to-face volunteers who are today and probably always will be the backbone of most volunteer efforts. Face-to-face volunteering will always have a vital place in the delivery of social services. Our effort is not to replace these efforts, but to supplement them.

We believe there are thousands of people—ultimately millions—who, for a variety of reasons, may prefer to offer their volunteer services through electronic means. As more professionals retire and as society increases its recognition of the benefits of volunteering, the number of potential CyberVolunteers will grow. The challenge, of course, is to encourage and help organizations create these opportunities for CyberVolunteering and let potential volunteers know of these opportunities.

If you share our enthusiasm for this relatively new type of volunteering, let us know. Maybe there’s a way you can help us make this exciting concept catch on. Start by looking at our Please Help Us page.
